Big Shopper by Van Leen

For this big shopper we have re-used plastic bottles ... and recycled another element from the past: the works from known and lesser-known artists that all left us with great riches to enjoy for eternity. Your reusable bag is inspired by a tiny watercolor painted by the 18th century Dutch painter Willem van Leen: ‘Bouquet of tulips, violets, blue grapes and dotters’.

The original only measures 21 x 14,4 cm and is one of the many studies Van Leen undertook to practice his skills for the successful flower painter he would become. The scenery of this fragile bouquet might very well have been the pleasant and peaceful Jardin des Plantes in the heart of Paris. This was the quiet haven where Van Leen could withdraw from the busy city life when he was living in Paris in his twenties, most likely witnessing the French Revolution in 1789.
