Our Stories Singer Laren: Breitner

Singer Laren: Breitner

Singer Laren: Breitner

Sincerity, boldness, and an unforgettable charm: that’s Anna, one of George Hendrik Breitner’s (1857–1923) muses and the star of ‘Meisje in rode kimono’. For the temporary exhibition 'Breitner Schilderbeest' at Singer Laren, we dove into every exquisite detail of her lying down in her red Japanese kimono.

Breitner, often called the Dutch Impressionist, had a gift for capturing cinematic moments on canvas. His secret? Photographing his models first, an unconventional technique in the late 19th century. He was deeply inspired by Japanism, the wave of fascination with Japanese art that swept Europe early 20th century and painted a series of girls in kimonos that beautifully blended the East and the West.

The pattern design that we created has been used to develop a variety of fun products to enjoy Breitner every day: a scarf, matching socks, flat pouches and a pillow cushion.
