Rain Hat by De Heem (Mirabilis)
This rain hat is inspired by a flower still life by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, one of the most famous Dutch still life painters of the 17th century.
Whereas his predecessors made rather hushed floral compositions, De Heem painted true floral explosions - exotic and colourful with flowers at random, all very expressively arranged. On the one hand, he fully celebrated the beauty of flora; on the other, De Heem embodied the ‘Memento Mori’ zeitgeist by adding all sorts of symbols that referred to how limited one’s time on earth was. Remember: just like a snail or a butterfly, you too can die in a few minutes.
