These socks are inspired by a series of woodcuts of birds and flowers by Japanese artist Hokusai, world-famous for his obsession with depicting Mount Fuji. Just think of The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1831).
For him, as a Buddhist, Mount Fuji was the sacred source of the secret of immortality. It was also a personal desire: Hokusai constantly worked to improve his work and was quoted on his deathbed at the age of 89: “If heaven gives me only 10 more years..." Just 5 more years, then I could become a real painter.” Hokusai is said to have created more than 30,000 works of art, but most have not survived the passage of time. One reason may be that he used about 50 different names to sign his works, at one point simply Gakyō Rōjin Manji (The Old Man Mad About Art).
