These socks are inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s ‘Rosa Ausgleich’ (Pink Compensation) (1933), a painting that radiates both tranquillity and a quiet intensity.
Kandinsky believed that colours could speak directly to our emotions – just like music. He even experienced synesthesia, a neurological phenomenon in which stimuli to one sense trigger involuntary sensations in another: Kandinsky could ‘hear’ colours.
In this painting, deep blues and muted purples are set against sudden flashes of pink and red. The title offers a clue: ‘Compensation’. Each colour reacts to another, as if the entire painting were constantly rebalancing itself. What appears simple at first glance is in fact a finely tuned composition – one that you not only see, but almost feel.
