Socks by Merian (5 pairs)

This design is inspired by Maria Sibylla Merian’s ‘Chinese Vase with Flowers’ (ca. 1670–1680) — a bouquet that looks decorative at first glance, but is actually full of life.

Merian painted what she observed: flowers, insects, and everything in between. At a time when many people still believed insects were spontaneously generated like maggots, she proved they transformed — raising caterpillars herself and documenting every stage as of the age of 13.

From day one, Merian was a successful painter, but when, as a (divorced) single woman, she embarked on an expedition to Suriname, she cemented her reputation as we know it today. An artist and ecologist who, with the help of the indigenous people’s knowledge, was the first to document how the insect and plant kingdoms develop from seed to maturity. And, more importantly, how they are interconnected within the food chain.
