This foldable crossbody bag is inspired by a pattern design by John Henry Dearle (1860–1932), a British artist and designer trained by the legendary William Morris. Morris pioneered a new approach to design and manufacturing, advocating hand craftsmanship during a time when industrial mass production was at its peak. As a social reformer who fought against class division, he often gave street-corner speeches, participated in marches, and even helped found the Socialist League.
Dearle began his career as a shop assistant at Morris & Co., where he was soon handpicked by Morris as a tapestry apprentice. He began designing wallpaper patterns, and after Morris’s death, Dearle became the firm’s Art Director, shaping its creative direction for decades. Though often overshadowed by Morris, Dearle’s bold, intricate patterns left a lasting mark on British design.
